The story is that of great Nala Mahaaraaja told to Dharmaraaja of Mahaabhaaratha by Sage Romaka. According to the 12th century text Nishadha Charita, one of the five mahakavyas (great epic poems) in the canon of Sanskrit literature written by Sriharsha, Nala, King of Nishadha, was chosen by Damayanti as her husband in the swayamvara, a function in which the bride selects her husband from among the invitees, in preference to even the gods who came to marry her.Nala, a character in Indian history, is the king of Nishadha Kingdom and the son of Veerasena. Nala is known for his skill with horses and for his culinary expertise. He marries princess Damayanti, of the Vidarbha Kingdom, and their story is told in the Mahabharata. His main weakness is gambling. He is possessed by the demon Kali. He was also a great cook, and wrote the first ever book on cookery, Pakadarpanam. This a good book for people with the knowledge of old Kannada. So read on to know the full story.

Sri M A Ramanuja Iyengar after working at Arya Matha Sanjeevini magazine with Pandit Asuri Anandalwar and Komaraswamy Tirumalcharya, met Sri S G Narasimhacharya and both of them continued in Arya Matha Sanjeevini which closed down after publishing a couple of books. Later on both MAR and SGN joined together and started Karnataka Kaavya Manjiri in 1892 which ran for 5 years and brought out many books and stopped publishing due to unforeseen circumstances. However, their air was to serve Kannad Literature and hence they started another magazine 'Karnataka Kalanidhi' in 1899 which ended in 1916. Meanwhile SGN passed away in 1907and the responsibility of the magazine was left to MAR.
